Victorian-based Supercars squads are joining the exodus from the COVID-19 stricken state, making a dash for Sydney Motorsport Park to beat the NSW border closure deadline ahead of next weekend’s meeting in the NSW capital.
Sydney Motorsport Park (SMS) hosted the opening round of the championships at the end of June, and the next round was supposed to be at Winton in country Victoria. However, officials revamped the calendar at short notice and installed SMS for the second meeting as well once the scale of the problems in Victoria became clear.
A number of the sport’s leading teams are based in the state. Kelly Racing, Walkinshaw Andretti United, Erebus Motorsport and Tickford Racing are all headquartered in Melbourne while a number of drivers also call the city home.
Supercars said in a statement released on Monday afternoon that the move to open up the garages at SMS from Monday night for Victorian teams had been taken following ongoing discussions with NSW and Victorian health authorities.
