Four people have been caught trying to sail from Byron Bay to Cairns without border closure exemptions.

The Queensland border has been closed to people travelling from NSW since last weekend, unless exemptions are applied for and granted.

The four people were intercepted by maritime safety officials on Friday, who found that none of them had a border exemption, Nine News reported.

Each member of the party now faces a $4000 fine and will be required to pay for a 14-day stay in mandatory hotel quarantine.
