Storm player forced to undergo COVID-19 testing after inviting guest into hub

Origin prop Christian Welch has apologised after inviting a guest into the NRL bubble on Thursday night.

Welch was stood down on Friday and is set to be fined by the NRL for breaching the game’s strict biosecurity rules after bringing an “unregistered” guest into the Storm’s Sunshine Coast bubble.

Melbourne were set to be freed from quarantine after midnight on Friday after spending 14 days in Queensland, but the guest arrived prior to midnight and therefore was in breach of the COVID-19 protocols.

“I’m incredibly remorseful and sorry for my actions,” he said in a statement released by the club. “I love this game and everything it has given me and I’m shattered that I have let everyone down.
