Hyeronimus starts betting disqualification after changing plea

Group 1-winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus will not ride for the rest of the spring carnival and might not be seen in the saddle until 2022 after changing his plea to three betting charges at his appeal against a three-year disqualification on Tuesday.

Hyeronimus and his cousin and stablehand Blake Paine steadfastly held the line that they had not been betting together for the 18 months of the inquiry, two hearing days in front of stewards and the first day of the appeal.

However, after Paine was cross-examined about his evidence surrounding text messages during the appeal and was warned by Racing NSW Appeal panel chairman Richard Beasley that he had taken an oath, the pair decided to change their plea to three of the 30 betting charges to guilty.

Hyeronuimus, who won the Shoot Out Mile on Discharged on Saturday, had his stay of proceedings immediately revoked and has started his disqualification.
