Kean taps ‘fearless’ ACCC executive to head NSW’s environment watchdog

“As Graeme Samuel, business leader and former chairman of the ACCC, recently observed, there is no point having strong environmental laws unless they as going to be enforced.”

Mr Kean’s comments echo those he made in July when he supported Mr Samuel’s recommendation of a federal “green cop” as part of environmental law reform. The recommendation was immediately rejected by federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

“The people of NSW expect that our environment will be protected and that we ensure we leave it in a better condition for our kids than we found it,” Mr Kean told staff. “Rayne will ensure that the EPA continues to have this goal as its primary objective.”

In a media release, Ms de Gruchy said she was excited to be taking on the role.

“I’m looking forward to contributing to the important work of the EPA and working with businesses, government and the community to reduce pollution and waste, protect human health, and prevent degradation of the spectacular natural environment in NSW,” she said.
