Panthers hold off Tigers and Bulldogs to keep rising star Staines

Penrith have staved off interest from Wests Tigers and the Bulldogs to keep Charlie Staines at the club until the end of 2023, and have now turned their attention to in-demand Matt Burton.

The Panthers tabled 20-year-old Staines an upgraded extension two months ago, but the player’s manager indicated they wanted to wait until November 1 to see what other opportunities arose, given his path at Penrith may be blocked by Dylan Edwards.

Penrith granted Staines, who scored four tries on his debut earlier in the year, permission to see what he could attract at rival clubs but he has now committed his future to the team on a deal believed to be worth about $250,000 a season.

“Panthers have done so much for me and my family so it feels good to repay that faith they’ve shown in me,” Staines said.
