Electronic monitoring plan to allow home quarantine for arrivals

Stranded Australians could fly home sooner under a national proposal to use electronic devices to monitor travellers at home and ease pressure on hotel quarantine in each state.

The proposal is being put to national cabinet as a way to expand the quarantine system and add to the 5575 international arrivals allowed each week into Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The head of the national review of hotel quarantine, Jane Halton, said it would be up to travellers to choose the option along the lines of a system in Singapore that asks people to wear a wristband to track their location.

“We’re looking to see whether, in fact, the combination of electronic monitoring for people, if that’s their choice, together with much more testing, might enable more people than currently to do the quarantine at home, if they can do so safely,” Ms Halton told ABC TV on Friday.
