”He’s ridden a winner on Cox Plate Day and now over the Flemington carnival, it’s great. We’ve stuck with our riders and they’re repaying us,” said Pakenham-based Stokes.
“The straight is not a problem and, geez, he’s a fast horse and he’s going great.”
Poy added:” This horse has now shown he’s up to group class. This was a pretty nice race for him … he put four-in-a-row together now, he might be a bit better around a bend at Moonee Valley but he’s a nice horse.”
Brett Scott was one of the nation’s top jump jockeys in his riding days, but as a trainer he has more flat runners than hurdlers and steeplechasers.
One of them, Irish Flame, gave him his first winner at Flemington during Cup week when he landed the Twitter Trophy under Daniel Stackhouse, a fellow New Zealander.
Now he is likely to try to step up in grade and take the last feature of the spring carnival, the Ballarat Cup.
”The visor and the ear muffs have got him to relax a bit better in the run but also give him a bit of fight at the end in his races. Hopefully we can roll on and if he pulls up alright we can go on to the Ballarat Cup.”
Sydney jockey and trainer Hugh Bowman and John O’Shea teamed up for a running double in the greys race – the Subzero Handicap – and the $250,000 Inglis Bracelet for fillies and mares.
Bowman left it late but got up in the final strides to land the race named in honour of the late great Melbourne Cup winner aboard Berdibek and in the same predominantly yellow colours he took the richly-endowed Bracelet aboard Rocha Clock, who prevailed from the unlucky Re Edit who only got clear running late.
“I remember years and years ago watching the greys race on television and hoping one day I could compete in it and I’ve won it here today for my good friend John,” Bowman said after his first victory.
After scoring on Rocha Clock Bowman said: ”It was a good win, she was a bit lost here at Flemington. She still won with a bit of authority I thought.”
