‘What dreams are made of’: Wright’s night to remember

“Unbelievable. That’s pretty much what dreams are made of,” Wright said when asked about scoring with his first touch. It goes through your head at stages – how you’re going to get involved or what your first touch might look like. When it gets put on a platter for you like that, it doesn’t get much better.”

Wright, who played a handful of NRL games for Manly Sea Eagles before returning to the 15-man game at the start of this season, formed a formidable back three partership with Marika Koroibete and Tom Banks in the 24-22 win.

Koroibete is rugby’s latest cross-code success story and the reigning John Eales Medallist was at his ferocious best at Suncorp Stadium.

Having followed his path from rugby league to the Wallabies, Wright has kept a close eye on how the Fijian flyer goes about his work through the week since joining the Wallabies’ set-up.

“He’s probably the benchmark, if anything,” Wright said. “He leaves absolutely no stone unturned and you see that in both the way he prepares each week and the way he trains. You won’t find many blokes that train harder or work harder than him.

“He’s definitely someone that if you’re looking to watch someone at training, you don’t have to look too far. To be able to play alongside him tonight was really special.”

While Wright celebrated his debut, Slipper was the star of the post-match show. All Blacks skipper Sam Cane presented the 100-Test prop with a bottle of red wine and the Brumbies star has been overwhelmed by the messages of support in the last seven days.

“I had the best week in terms of messages, videos. James Horwill was obviously a big part of my career here at the Reds and Wallabies and I FaceTime’d him actually yesterday,” Slipper said. “It was a really special week and it was led by (his teammates), here.

“I didn’t realise how liked I was. It made it special but the icing on the cake tonight was actually getting the result.”
