‘NSW can’t control it’: states clash on border closure ahead of national cabinet

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian will come face to face with her counterpart Annastacia Palaszczuk over Zoom in their first formal meeting since the Queensland Premier’s reelection, as ongoing tensions simmered over the hard border closure between the states.

Ahead of Friday’s national cabinet meeting to discuss the COVID-19 response, Ms Berejiklian said her focus would be on advocating for the border reopening, doubling down on her position that NSW had done “the heavy lifting” on hotel quarantine for states like Queensland.

“The Queensland Premier shut the borders and is keeping them shut. No one else bears the responsibility.”

The ongoing closure means NRL boss Peter V’landys will be unable to attend next week’s final State of Origin decider in Brisbane, following the Blues’ 34-10 victory over the Maroons on Wednesday. He declined to comment when contacted by the Herald.
