Labor by nine votes: Government wins historic Bundaberg, Nicklin recounts

Labor has won the Sunshine Coast-based seat of Nicklin for the first time in its history and held on to the tightly contested seat of Bundaberg by just nine votes after recounts following the state election almost two weeks ago.

The two seats were final pieces to the parliamentary puzzle and deliver the Palaszczuk government 52 of the state’s 93 seats – a net gain of four from its last term after losing South Brisbane to the Greens.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland was expected to make formal declarations for both seats on Friday afternoon.

Party scrutineers say the recount, requested by the LNP after the initial count was finalised on Wednesday, dropped the margin in Bundaberg from 11 votes and increased it in Nicklin from 79 to 85.

The Sunshine Coast, created in 1986 and named after a former conservative Premier, has been held by the Liberals and Nationals at every election but will now fall to Labor’s former firefighter candidate Rob Skelton.
