Sydney swelters through heatwave as temperatures hit 40 degrees

“We had a frontal system move across the state towards the coast, with a high-pressure system behind it, which brought in a lot of warm air from central Australia particularly to the western and north-western parts of NSW,” he said.

“As the westerly moved across the ranges and the eastern parts of the state, we saw the temperatures really rising around parts of greater Sydney, into the high 30s and early 40s after 1pm.”

Temperatures throughout the city spiked at 40.6 degrees at Badgerys Creek in the city’s west, 39.7 degrees at Sydney Airport and 39 degrees at Sydney Olympic Park.

The mercury hit 38 degrees at Terrey Hills in Sydney’s north west, and 36.4 degrees in Camden, on the city’s south-western fringe.

In other parts, temperatures passed 40 degrees near Moree, Narrabri and Walgett, reaching a top of 42.7 in the Central Western Slopes and Plains.

Southerly winds sweeping through the state had started to drop temperatures in southern parts of NSW on Monday afternoon. The cool change is expected to arrive in Sydney in the mid-to-late evening and into Tuesday.

“In some parts of the south we’re seeing a drop of 10 degrees. Some of those areas with high temperatures will see a gradual decrease in temperatures of 10, 12, even 15 degrees,” Mr Shabren said.

“Once this cool change moves across we’ll see quite settled conditions moving into Wednesday and Thursday.”

Temperatures are expected to hover around the “high teens and low 20s” overnight.

Sydney is forecast to reach a top of 21 degrees on Tuesday, 23 on Wednesday and 25 on Thursday.

Mr Shabren said the burst of intense heat was not unusual for this time of year and high temperatures, thunderstorms and unsettled weather in recent days were “part of the transition into summer”.
