Fowler wins FIFA unfair dismissal case but Roar still claim vindication

Robbie Fowler has scored a legal win over his ex-employers Brisbane Roar after FIFA’s dispute resolution chamber found he was wrongfully dismissed by the A-League club.

The world governing body has ordered the club to pay damages to former head coach Fowler and his assistant Tony Grant, whose contracts were terminated without notice – and, as FIFA ruled last week, without just cause – during the A-League’s shutdown period.

The amount owing is a six-figure sum that equates to three months of lost income for Fowler and Grant, between their sacking from the Roar in late June to the start of their tenure at East Bengal SC in the Indian Super League, where the pair recently re-united.

Fowler’s lawyer, Sydney barrister and Herald columnist Darren Kane, described the result as a “complete victory” for the former Liverpool striker, who signed a two-year contract with the Roar but only coached 22 games before the pandemic interrupted his first season and he returned to England with the club’s permission.
