‘The forecast is not good’: Golden Slipper postponed amid Sydney’s big wet

Racing NSW stewards have postponed the Golden Slipper meeting after heavy overnight rain made Rosehill unsafe for racing and a diabolical forecast for further rain on Saturday.

Chief steward Marc Van Gestel made the decision at 6.30am after a couple of horses had worked on the track and he inspected it. Rosehill had received almost 100mm of rain during the past couple of days but it was the further 25mm on Saturday morning that made it unsafe to race.

“The track was in great condition but the rain meant it had started to squelch in a couple of places and the forecast as we know is not good,” Van Gestel said.

“With all the rain the track was full and there is nowhere for the water to go, so unfortunately we have to postpone.”

Racing NSW and Australian Turf Club are in discussions as to when the meeting or parts of the program will be rescheduled. Plans will be announced later on Saturday morning.

There are five group 1 races, including the Ranvet Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, George Ryder Stakes, and The Galaxy, which will need to be rescheduled. There is a flow-on effect which will be felt for the remainder of the autumn carnival.

It is the second time the Golden Slipper has had to be postponed; the other occasion was in 1963 when Pago Pago won the race when it was run on the following Wednesday.

The ATC has the meeting insured and will once again have to claim the policy after doing so when there was no crowd last year because of COVID-19.
