The Brit, who was mounting his latest comeback after two hip operations, received a standing ovation from the local crowd as he walked off centre court with a wave.
Despite eliminating the local hope and disappointing the crowd, Shapovalov did his best to endear himself in his on-court interview after the match.
“To play against a legend like Andy today, he’s been an inspiration to me,” he said.
“I told him at the net that he’s my hero. Achievements aside. The first set we played was super intense and after that I was able to maintain the level and he dropped a little.”
Main draw debutant Sebastian Korda reached the last 16 with an impressive 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Brit Dan Evans on Centre Court. A few days after his older sister, Nelly, won the women’s PGA Championship to become the world’s top-ranked golfer, Korda maintained their family tradition with a superb display.
In the women’s draw, Tunisian Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to ever reach the Wimbledon third round with a hard-fought three sets victory over 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza 5-7 6-3 6-2.
Seventh seed Iga Swiatek stormed past Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1 6-0 and eighth-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova was similarly untroubled against countrywoman Tereza Martincova 6-3 6-3. Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus also enjoyed a straight sets win, while former US Open champion Sloane Stephens was bundled out in three sets at the hands of Russian Liudmila Samsonova 6-2 2-6 6-4. Stephens’ fellow American, 23rd seed Madison Keys defeated the 13th seed Elise Mertens 7-5 6-3.
Elsewhere, Nick Kyrgios’ bright start to Wimbledon continued, despite an awkward build-up. He and mixed doubles playing partner Venus Williams won through to the second round after a three sets win over American duo Austin Krajicek and Sabrina Santamaria.
Kyrgios meets 16th seed Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the third round of his singles campaign on Saturday.
