Man dies after being pulled unconscious from Malabar unit fire

A man has died after he was found unconscious inside an apartment on fire in Sydney’s south east on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services received several triple zero calls shortly before 10am, reporting a fire at a unit complex on Wyee Place in Malabar.

When crews arrived at the scene they located the fire in the kitchen of a unit and found a man in his 50s unconscious inside.

More than 20 firefighters worked to put out the blaze before undertaking salvage and ventilation operations.

A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said the man was pulled from the “extremely smoke-logged unit” and firefighters worked on him outside until paramedics arrived.

Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the man could not be revived and he died at the scene.

He has not yet been formally identified.

Neighbours were evacuated but the fire was contained to the unit where it started, which was “significantly damaged”, the spokesman said.

After the fire was extinguished NSW Police established a crime scene as investigators look into its cause.
