Vaccination targets no golden ticket to total lifting of restrictions in Qld

Lockdowns won’t necessarily be ruled out once vaccination targets are reached, but hitting the targets will be the “ticket” to seeing greater easing of rules across Queensland, state authorities say.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles says talk of vaccination targets of 70 or 80 per cent resulting in lockdowns and restrictions completely easing is too simplistic.

“The Doherty [Institute] modelling has been oversimplified, and it’s not a case of open or locked down,” he said.

“Of course there are many, many restrictions between fully open and locked down, and depending on the caseload, depending on the rate of spread, and depending on the rate of vaccinations, well, then you can choose which of those restrictions you put in place and model out what level of restrictions you get, what level of cases, and what level of hospitalisation, and that’s precisely what we will be looking to over coming months.

“But right now, we just need NSW to get in control of their outbreak because everyone sees those case numbers are going up dramatically every day.”

Mr Miles said Doherty Institute research states that at 70 per cent vaccination rates, the likelihood of requiring lockdowns is greatly reduced, while at 80 per cent, the need becomes very small.

“Lots of people are verballing the Doherty research, lots of people are saying that at 80 per cent, that means all restrictions are lifted,” he said.

“Well, nobody signed up to that plan. We signed up to a plan which said that at 70 per cent, lockdowns would be much less likely, and at 80 per cent, they would likely only need to be very targeted.”
