Police are investigating after a man was shot dead near Port Stephens in the NSW Hunter region on Sunday afternoon.
Just before 1.45pm police and paramedics responded to a call that a car had hit a tree on Hideaway Drive in Salt Ash.
Upon arrival emergency services found a male driver of a Ford Ranger utility suffering a gunshot wound.
Paramedics were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
Police then found a second vehicle burnt on Masonite Road in Heatherbrae.
Police believe the man was shot while driving, and the shooting caused the subsequent car crash into the tree.
Both crime scenes are being examined by specialist forensic officers, who are treating the death as suspicious.
The state crime command’s homicide squad are assisting detectives to investigate the circumstances of the man’s death.
