Authorities revealed just one person had checked in using the state government app at the time the man had visited the Stylish Nails salon inside the Beenleigh marketplace, and they are now racing to contact trace as many people from the salon as they can using other means.
Dr Young said that was disappointing, but urged everyone to use the current window of time to get vaccinated if possible.
“[Lockdown] depends on if we find cases who went to the Beenleigh Marketplace, and have since then been out infectious in the community in an uncontrolled situation,” she said.
“That would lead me to think that we need to consider a lockdown.”
In response to the situation the government has put visiting restrictions in place for aged care facilities, disability services and hospitals in the Logan council area specifically, however no further restrictions are being imposed at this stage.
Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath warned they could put tighter restrictions in place at short notice if more cases came to light.
“The next 48 hours is critical here,” she said. “We need to test as many people as we can, and we need to ensure that we quarantine those people.
“That’s why when we saw the Indooroopilly cluster, we were able to find the families and find them quickly.”
That cluster ripped through six Brisbane schools and saw thousands placed in home quarantine before it was contained, including a significant cohort of health workers, which put strain on local hospitals to fill the staffing gap.
Griffith University infectious diseases expert Nigel McMillan said it was not a case of if the Delta variant would gain a foothold in Queensland, but when.
However, he said that didn’t mean the “when” had to be now.
“We need to keep up measures like social distancing, wearing masks and using that check-in app because the speed at which Delta moves is fast, and we have to be fast to stay ahead of it,” Professor McMillan said.
“People in other states might be envious of our lifestyle right now, but we are the best guardians of that lifestyle, and if we want to keep that lifestyle we have to be as vigilant as possible.”
