Apple has unveiled several new devices overnight, with four new iPhones featuring tweaked designs and improved 5G, two new iPads including a redesigned mini and Apple Watches with larger displays.
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini presented during the tech giant’s online California Streaming event are 2021’s base model Apple smartphones, and largely resemble their iPhone 12 counterparts from last year. The “notch” display cutout on the front is now smaller for more usable screen space, while the rear cameras are in a new diagonal layout and borrow some tech from last year’s iPhone 12 Pro.
There’s also a new rack focus feature for video that Apple calls “cinematic mode”, which transitions between background and foreground focus automatically based on the action you’re capturing.
The phones are powered by the new A15 Bionic chip, which Apple says is up to 50 per cent faster than the competition while not specifying what that competition is. iPhone 13 supports more 5G bands to make it more compatible with future and international networks, has up to two-and-a-half hours more battery life than iPhone 12 and now starts at 128GB of internal storage; twice that of last year.
All iPhones this year will hit stores on September 24, starting at $1349 and $1199 for iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini respectively. Last year’s iPhone 12 has subsequently seen a price drop to start at $999.
iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max meanwhile received the lion’s share of significant upgrades. Along with everything listed above, Apple’s priciest phones have new screens than can display at up to 120Hz for extremely smooth motion, and go brighter than before at up to 1000 nits.
The three-camera setup sees a larger wide sensor for better low-light performance, a wider aperture on the ultra-wide and a 3x optical zoom on the telephoto. There’s a new macro mode that can focus on subjects two centimetres away, as well as sensor-shift optical stabilisation.
Storage on the Pro models now goes up to 1TB, although you can expect to pay more than $2500 for that privilege. The 128GB models go for $1699 and $1849 for the Pro and Pro Max respectively.
