Three-year-olds to the fore on Central Coast

It seems only fitting that in the week leading up to Saturday’s three-year-old group 1 Golden Rose showdown that the classic age is set to cut a swathe through Tuesday’s feature Wyong meeting.

It might only be a couple of good class four-year-old sprinters late in the program who turn back the three-year-old tide.

On a day when some short-priced fancies will aim to put down a spring marker for better races ahead, smart Capitalist filly Shihonka leads the three-year-old charge in a maiden for the girls over 1100m.

Returning from two strong efforts up to listed grade as a two-year-old in late autumn, Shihonka sounded a big warning to her rivals showing great cruising speed to career away and win a provincial trial by nearly seven lengths.

Not only did Shihonka have plenty in reserve on the line, she also ran a quicker time for the 800m than group 2 winner Mamaragan and dual listed winner Athiri. She is already a $26.00 chance in all-in betting for the group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) for the fillies on October 2.

Earlier, Bull Point three-year-old Raging Bull is set to make mince meat of a very modest maiden staying field to open the meeting before most eyes turn to three-year-old Zoustar colt Battleton, who debuts in a maiden over 1100m for the boys and draws to get the right cover.

Despite a reluctance to leave the barriers on terms in two lead-up trials, Battleton has shown natural acceleration to find the line, and trainer Bjorn Baker has him quietly earmarked for much bigger assignments down the track.

The other exciting three-year-old is Kiss Sum, who resumes for popular local trainer Tracey Bartley and will take a power of beating first-up in a good quality class 1 over 1100m.
